Frank Stiles - Four Pieces for Solo Viola

Other Information

Dedicated to Winifred Copperwheat [pictured below right with Frank] who was Frank Stiles´ own viola teacher. On the recording, the first of the pieces is played by Henry Myerscough [pictured below left] This was recorded at the Purcell Room on 8th April 1978.

The biography on the left is a scan of Frank´s page in the brilliantly comprehensive book "An Anthology of British Viola Players" [Camus Edition, 1998] edited by John White. This is highly recommended reading, which was described by Dwight Pounds in Vol. 14, No. 4 of Strings as “…quite probably the most important and extensive collection of biographical descriptions on violists ever assembled under one cover…a carefully researched and documented academic work.”  An image of the front cover is shown on the page with the other information about Movement 3 of Frank Stiles´ Viola Concerto. If fortunate to get a copy, you will be able to fill in the details about Frank, his teacher Winifred Copperwheat, her teacher Lionel Tertis and the violist Henry Myerscough who is playing on the recording which can be accessed from this page. Double click the photo to read it clearly.

The first is rhapsodic, the second a scherzo, the third a nocturne and the finale is fugal containing a cadenza in which material from the previous movements is repeated.

If the complete recording is required [strictly for private study] it, and the score, may be acquired at cost by contacting the CCA directly.
