A Poet's Journey 1914-17
A song cycle based on 15 poems by Edward Thomas
Lyndon Gardner (tenor)
Anthony Wilson (piano)
Music by John Middleton
Edward Thomas is revered by other writers. He broke the mold of traditional poetry by using 'speech rhythms'. The words evoke the English landscape and the elements. There are frequent references to men who are missing 'over there', such as a ploughman's mate, killed in France, leaving one man to manage the horses. Transcendental surges of joy alternate with sadness and wondering about the purpose of life. These poems were written in a military training camp, before Thomas met his death near Arras. Middleton's music reflects the emotional rollercoaster which is a feature of the poems.
This is the premier performance. The performers are ready to deliver. Come and be part of it!
