Other Information

A work for choir and organ which has been written for the final concert of the 40th Anniversary season of the superb Leicestershire Chorale and their eximious conductor Tom Williams. It is written in memory of Wanda G Davies, a founder member of the Chorale, who sang with the choir for 38 years. The composer was himself a founder member of the Chorale which was formed by Music Advisor Peter Fletcher, under the benevolent and inspired guidance of the then Director of Education, Andrew Fairbairn. Peter Fletcher [later Principal of the RWCMD] was to oversee the Formation of a Special Adult Choir in Leicestershire . It was announced that this special choir should consist largely of keen and able singers teaching in Leicestershire. Peter wanted to bring teachers together, many of whom were one person departments schools at all key stages. Part of its stated aim was to provide a high level performance outlet for teachers and to provide, through performance and the experience of covering a considerably larger repertoire a stimulus for choir singing in Leicestershire . Forty years later it has maintained that ethos although is not now a choir of educationalists. The Gift to Sing is a poem by an African American poet James Weldon Johnson and it fuses those words [see below left] with the sixth verse of Psalm 150. It was premiered by Leicestershire Chorale under Tom Williams with David Cowen on the organ at St Aidan's Church, New Parks, Leicester on 30th June 2018.
